In late July, the Deputy Mayor of Environment and Energy, Shirley Rodrigues, visited Energetik’s Energy Centre construction site at the Edmonton Eco-Park. The Greater London Authority representative was accompanied by LB Enfield’s Chief Executive Ian Davis and Enfield Councillor, Ergin Erbil.
The tour visited site to see the first foundations of Energetik’s energy centre. The energy centre will make use of otherwise wasted heat energy to serve tens of thousands of homes and businesses across north London with very-low carbon heating and hot water. Construction began earlier this year and is expected to be complete by the end of 2022. Once connected to the new Energy Recovery Facility in 2026, all homes served by Energetik will be supplied with very-low carbon heat and hot water generated at the Eco-Park. This will effectively reduce homes’ carbon footprint from heat by over 90% compared to a traditional individual gas boiler system. With the capacity to supply up to 50,000 homes and business with fairly priced and environmentally friendly energy, Energetik has immense potential to combat both fuel poverty and the climate emergency across Enfield and beyond.
The Greater London Authority has recognised Energetik’s decarbonisation potential and has provided £1.2M in grant funding to the development of Energetik’s heat networks. As part of the Mayor of London’s Green new Deal, part of the funding package will fund a strategic extension of the future Meridian Water heat network pipe infrastructure, making it possible for Energetik to supply energy to the neighbouring boroughs of Haringey and Hackney. The remaining funding is enabling a retrofit trial in the Ponders End area which aims to study the decarbonisation opportunities for existing housing stock in London. Energetik’s Managing Director Jayne Clare said:
“The building of our energy centre is a long-awaited step forward for our team and we’re extremely excited to watch as construction progresses. Upon completion of our project, Energetik will deliver huge decarbonisation and air quality benefits across Enfield and beyond.
The support of local and regional authorities has been essential to the development of Energetik’s heat network to date and has enabled the company to surpass all expectations. We are therefore extremely grateful that both the LBE and the GLA continue to support the company in reaching its full potential.”
Deputy Mayor of Environment and Energy, Shirley Rodrigues said:
“It’s fantastic to see first-hand how this ambitious project is developing. Low-carbon heating solutions like this have a crucial role in tackling the climate emergency, improving air quality and making London a zero-carbon city by 2030. It will also help us address the rising social challenge of fuel poverty, where one in nine London households are unable to meet the cost of heating their homes. When completed, thousands of households will benefit from green and affordable heat, connected directly to their homes.
With this grant awarded through the Mayor’s Green New Deal fund, Energetik are helping to support the green jobs and skills of the future which are so crucial to meeting our city’s climate targets.”
NOTES TO EDITORS
About Energetik
Energetik is Enfield Council’s energy company, created to build, own and operate low carbon heat networks in north London. We provide quality customer service and reliable heat which is fairly priced and locally generated.
Our high-quality heat network infrastructure is built to last and will have the capacity to serve tens of thousands of homes within Enfield and beyond. The infrastructure is futureproof, with an 80-year life expectancy and can be adapted to easily incorporate alternative low-carbon heat sources as technology develops without the need to change the technology in individual homes. The networks are being built in key regeneration areas of Enfield and are designed to expand to connect and share the low-carbon heat source with other developments.
