Heron Hall School in Ponders End has successfully been connected to Energetik’s district heating network, becoming the first of eight schools scheduled to connect over the next two years as part of a wider Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) programme running through to 2028.
Prior to the connection, the school’s existing boilers were failing and no longer able to provide reliable heat. To maintain operations, the school was forced to rely on a temporary boiler installation, creating significant and unsustainable costs while a permanent solution was developed.
Working closely with North Star Community Trust, Department for Education stakeholders and the school’s leadership team, Energetik delivered a long‑term heating solution by connecting the school to its district heating network. The successful heating changeover has now replaced failing fossil‑fuel gas heating with a reliable, efficient and long‑term low‑carbon heat supply.

Marino Charalambous, CEO of North Star Community Trust had this to say, “Thank you to the Energetik team for a smooth and well-managed installation process. The support provided on site has been outstanding, with Dennis King providing exceptional support throughout.
We are delighted to have successfully connected to the Energetik heat network, the first completed under the PSDS scheme. This is a significant step forward in our sustainability journey, helping us to reduce our carbon footprint while creating meaningful learning opportunities for our students around green energy and the future of our environment.”
The connection was delivered using grant funding secured on behalf of Enfield Council through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) — a major government‑backed initiative designed to support public sector bodies, including schools, to decarbonise heat and improve energy efficiency.
The PSDS is administered by Salix Finance on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and provides capital funding to help public buildings transition away from fossil‑fuel heating, reduce carbon emissions and improve long‑term affordability of energy.
Heron Hall is the first school delivered within Energetik’s PSDS‑funded schools programme, which represents a ~£20 million strategic investment in low‑carbon heat infrastructure across the borough. This investment not only enables the connection of schools over the next two years, but also lays the foundations for the future decarbonisation of a much wider range of public and private buildings, maximising long‑term carbon savings and value for residents.
By investing in shared heat network infrastructure rather than isolated building‑by‑building solutions, the programme helps schools avoid the high costs and operational risks associated with failing boilers and temporary heating systems, while creating a scalable platform for further connections in the years ahead.
